Back in the Black.

McNally had been unusually quiet, even for him, after leaving New Kincardine. The only thing he had done that openly interacted with the crew was 'properly' introducing Kid and Chai to Socrates, his cat. However, even then he was subdued and quickly returned to his cabin when Mei was in the vicinity. He took to eating in his cabin and even after Osden's confession he stayed over the other side of the room from the Companion and left as soon as was polite. It was even noticeable that he had not been seen punching bag as often, however it soon transpired that he had started to work-out his aggression during the middle-watch when most other folks were asleep. Whatever the reason, McNally was somehow more anti-social than normal, being 'around' only when he absolutely had to be and saying barely two words to anyone... and acting as if Mei didn't even exist.

Re: Back in the Black.

William sat in his cabin, stomach churning, however this time it wasn’t just being in space that was causing him to feel unwell. He replayed the wave again.
“William Burton.” The man on the screen began, he wore a neatly pressed Alliance uniform, “Due to the current situation you are being placed on reserved status. If reactivated you will be assigned to a unit and reinstated with your old rank.”
This is the last thing I want. He thought to himself, remembering what combat, real combat was like for a doctor. What they’d gone through on New Kincardine was nothing compared to a proper battlefield.
Surgery in the middle of a crater while people shot over your head and the ground shook from explosions was not his idea of fun.
While he could cope with that, it was the combat drops that really terrified him. He’d done three drops and had wanted to die each time. Unlike when he was on ship he couldn’t take anything for the drop as he had to be fully aware of what he was doing when he hit the ground.

Since departing New Kincardine he’d seen very little of Os. Well, when they were in flight he didn’t see much of anyone, but this was less than usual.
William had only seen him when he’d gone to check on his heart. He was very pleased with the work he and the other surgeon had done, though was ashamed that he couldn’t remember her name. While not very good at names he felt he should have at least remembered another doctor's name.

Hurriedly he grabbed a bag and threw the contents of his stomach into it, then with a sigh reached over and ticked off another combination that did not work. Sticking the bag in the waste re-claimer he collapsed back onto his bed, closed his eyes and wished to die.
I hate flying!

Re: Back in the Black.

Poppy was sat in the common area, a handheld computer in her hand. She was watching and rewatching the broadcast from miranda. Trying to understand it. Paxilon Hydroclorate was a chemical that had been added to the air filters. So how had it become a virus? They'd said on New Kincardine that there was some there and it was dangerous...but surely on most people it would mean they would just let themselves die, not turn them into reavers, right? Donut did say that people were infectd with it though, he had called it th 'miranda virus'. The Pax alone shouldn't have been enough to do that right? And Reavers didn't leave anyone alive, only those who would become like them and as far as she knew that happened quickly. So how could peple be infected? With a chemical compound? That only caused aggression in 0.1% of the population? and those it did cause that too went mad nd killed people... She shook her head, it just didn't make sense to her. She watched the broadcast through once more time before deciding some research was needed to try and understand all of this, and maybe talking to donut...

Re: Back in the Black.

The impact shook down his hand, arm and into his frame.
"Thou shalt not kill"
The second blow impact into the bag and a third.
"Thou shalt not kill, my son, the Lord himself said so."
He was back in the snow, back at the monastery, back with Abbot Gray.
"Rage at injustice by all means, my son, but not at injustice's hand. Simple men, make simple mistakes and vengeance brings back no dead." The old man's words had seemed so wise at the time. They had brought peace to the nightmare that the soldier's life had become.
The fourth blow slammed into the punch bag as the feeling of the cold wind died in the hold of the Black Rose.
"Vengeance serves none but the sword."
The fifth blow rocked the bag wildly and it dropped to the floor with a thud. Shepherd Lock looked down on it with quiet rage, he had lived with the sole blame for his loss for so long but now he had another face to blame. A terrorist's face.
He looked towards the door to the crew quarters.
"Thou shalt not kill."
As he stepped forward he felt a warm breeze and he was back where he'd been after death, back where he belonged and the fires of Hell reached up for him.
Then he was back in the hold.
He had much still to do, much good to perform to obscure the life that sentenced him to Hell both in this verse and the next. He could not afford the luxury of sin, he could not afford to harm a member of his flock.
He hung the bag back up on its hook.
The impact shook down his hand, arm and into his frame.
"I shalt not kill."
The second blow impacted into the bag, then another, and another.

Re: Back in the Black.

Kid entered quietly. Not wearing shoes on board meant she had a better feel for the ship and it meant she could wander around without disturbing the fragile peace on board. She watched the preacher for a few minutes before stepping into his field of view. "Probably easier if I brace it for you, Shepherd. We'll swap in a few minutes? Been ages since I had a sparring session." There's a hopeful note in her voice.
Nah, ship didn't need those parts anyway...

Re: Back in the Black.

Lock stopped and collected the towel hanging from a hook to swipe away sweat before he turned to the newcomer.
"Sure." He said and motioning to the bag. "This is part of the ship pretty much belongs to McNally and I, but the grizzly old fellow has been fairly absent of late. Guess I can't blame him, fraid I'm not the best company of late!"
Moving around the bag he took a good solid grip, he knew little of this girl and braced as he would for McNally.
"Try it out." He offered.

Re: Back in the Black.

She dragged her hair back quickly into a ponytail and sized up the bag. Her first few punches were hesitant, but as she warmed to it they loosened up and started connecting more solidly "Is everyone on board usually this subdued?" She paused to swipe stray hair from her eyes "You lot were mighty rowdy planetside, an' up here, its like the black's got hold of yer" she thudded another couple of punches home "I have a habit of sayin' the wrong thing at the wrong time to the wrong person is why I ask. I like you all, and would really rather not get stuck on another gorram farmin' moon." she grinned over at the preacher and landed another string of blows.

Re: Back in the Black.

McNally leaned against the wall in the access corridor just off the cargo hold. He heard his bag being hit, Kid and Lock talking but, for once, he didn't eavesdrop. Instead he stayed where he was, listening to the sounds of voices rather than the words, to the gentle hum of the engines and the subliminal vibration of a ship coursing the black. Soc padded up and rubbed against McNally's shin, looking up at him expectantly. McNally pressed a finger over his lips as though the cat would understand but instead Soc sat down, looked up and yawned letting out a soft yet slightly irritated yowl which resounded into the cargo hold.

'Gorramit,' McNally hissed. 'Why can't you keep your mouth shut, just once?'

Soc regarded the human with feline amusement and let out a myak as if, in that one sound, his intentions were made clear, and headed off towards the cargo hold with his tail in the air.

'Soc,' McNally said, his voice a hard whisper. 'Git back here.' The cat ignored him and continued into the hold. Shaking his head, McNally followed, his head lowered as he felt Kid and Lock look over to him. 'Don't mind me,' he remarked as he finally scooped up Soc in his hands and gently slung the ginger creature over one shoulder. 'Just don't want 'im gettin' a taste for freeze-dried apple.'

Re: Back in the Black.

"You aren't minded McNally, least not here." The Preacher had been trying to work out an appropriate response to Kidd and settled on "We're still rowdy, but most of the noise is going on inside folk's heads instead of their mouth like usual! But whilst we're on the subject of people, twist your hip more! Put your weight into the punch. McNally, git over here and show this lass one of your punches!"

Re: Back in the Black.

McNally gave a slight shrug, about to make an excuse when Soc's claws dug deep into his shoulder. 'GORRAM,' he hollored as the cat jumped down and dashed over to Kid, circling her ankles and emitting a purr that was more like a rattling air-filter. McNally shook his head. 'Seems like he's decided he like you after all,' he remarked, finally striding over. Lock moved back to give him more room and gestured to the bag. 'Lock's right, mind you, get your hips movin' in behind your punch and don't let your other shoulder drop or you'll find someone landin' a counter that'll fatten your lip but good.' He demonstrated a couple of combinations and delivered a flurry of powerful blows. 'An' don't always lead with your weaker hand. If you're a North-paw, go in South-paw sometimes, and switch often. Keeps 'em on their toes and also makes your lead punch harder to read.' He hooked an arm around the bag to steady and invited Kid to start up again.

By now Soc was seated up on one of the crates, watching McNally intently and looking for all the 'Verse as if his job, for now, was done.
